Boy Scouts of America, Troop and Crew 333 |

Boy Scout Crew 333, was formed in 2001 with the core members being young horse people who volunteered their time helping a small special needs horse riding program. The lure of the scouting program attracted their taste for adventure and independence. Knowing that Nicholas Coyne was an active scout leader and a fellow horseman, the group formed what started as Post 3 Mounted Search Rescue. From its beginning to the present, members of this unit, which is designated Crew 333 Lake Forest Illinois, have assisted in building two special needs horse barns from the ground up, doing everything from digging perimeter walls to bending electrical pipe to pulling and trimming electrical wire, along with honing their trade skills of carpentry, electrical, and concrete. They have learned Fire Fighter Tactics including operation of the Crew’s 1941 fire truck. They practice Emergency First Aid and the patient, exhausting exercise of Search and Rescue, mounted on horses, using a boat, and foot patrols, along with the basic scout skills of no match fires, land navigation with and without compass, and shelter building. This crew has been on summer camp staff at Camp Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan in northern Wisconsin and has served on the ranger staff at Philmont, the National Boy Scout Camp in New Mexico. Being selected to such a position is a great honor for any scout and something their unit can be very proud of. In 2009 Boy Scout Troop 333 was formed with a founding member of the Crew, Kristi Horwitz, as Scout Master. This is a special needs troop which will welcome all who wish to be Boy Scouts to their ranks. The proud traditions of service and honor shall be instilled to encourage members of this new unit as they climb the very challenging trail to Boy Scout’s highest rank, which is Eagle Scout. Of all who join the Boy Scouts, only one percent of these boys shall make Eagle Scout.
