HORSEFEATHERS THERAPEUTIC RIDING CENTER

Hippotherapy

Hippotherapy is the use of the movement of the horse as a treatment strategy by licensed occupational and physical therapists, and speech and language pathologists, to address impairments, functional limitations and disabilities in patients with neuromotor dysfunction. This treatment strategy is used as part of an integrated treatment program to achieve functional outcomes. Patient populations served by hippotherapy are children ages two and older, as well as adults, with diagnoses such as autism, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, spinal curvatures, stroke, developmental delay, brain injury and sensory processing disorder.

Horsefeathers Center provides hippotherapy on weekends during the school year and on several weekdays during the summer, since most of our  patients are school age.  Our licensed speech pathologist or occupational therapist will conduct an initial evaluation, obtain medical information, discuss treatment goals and schedule hippotherapy sessions either once or twice per week. A physician's prescription is needed to begin treatment.
